Album Vision
Throughout my life, I have used music as a way to express how I feel and who I am in Spanish or in English. My musical identity amalgamates genres ranging from jazz, to R&B, to Latin music. From an early age, I have combined different sounds to make eclectic music that is representative of my mixed roots. My artistic process starts with my piano or my guitar and my heart, and then I build on those simple elements to create music that is true to who I am and expresses my whole being. As a result of my musical process, I hope to connect with my listeners on a deep emotional level.
In my extensions of the soul album, I intend to project deep feelings out to the world through jazz, R&B and more, purposefully often using extended chords and jazz harmony and experimenting with a variety of jazz chord progressions in order to generate an added sense of melancholy and desire. R&B has a sound that allows me to express a wide range of sentiments, while jazz creates a harmonic environment for each song. R&B and jazz also blend well with other styles, allowing me to experiment and expand with genres such as electro funk and rap and modern sounds and production techniques.
The 6 tracks of the album are an amalgamation of my artistic vision:
The first track, “reflections.”starts with modern ethereal sounds but quickly transitions to an electric piano jazz improvisational piece underpinned by an R&B drum groove. While my intention is to have a modern approach to jazz, I speak to the past producing a vintage feel. On the second track, “purple sunshine.” I incorporate saxophone with pop and funk to create a piece reminiscent of “swing jazz” but with a more soulful deep sound. The third track, “i have waited long enough.” relies more on hip hop and contemporary electronic sounds. The fourth track, “i want you.” is a collaboration with artist (Psylo). Together, we were able to create an urban pop song that incorporates rhythmic elements from hip hop with harmony and melody from R&B. This is the only track in my album in which my voice takes center stage, and in combination with Psylo’s rap, it creates a unique fusion between two different styles of music. The fifth track, “te extraño.” is a fusion between lofi and jazz as I mix rich, soulful jazz harmony with laidback lofi drums. In this track I heavily incorporate the use of jazz harmony, such as the traditional 2-5-1 chord progression in order to give the song a sense of direction. The longing soulful voice provides a feel of melancholy. The sixth track is a reinterpretation of Chet Baker’s “I fall in love too easily” where I strip the song down to its basic harmony and build it back up with my own piano improvisation. I recorded this using a Steinway Upright Piano and a virtual electric piano instrument. jazz is at its best when the musicians are given freedom to follow their own path.
